Since ancient times, mystics and sages have told us that we are not our bodies. They have reminded us that our existence is eternal and that our souls return again and again to live many lifetimes of experience. Each time we enter this world, our memories are wiped clean so that we may begin anew, discovering life through fresh eyes. We forget who we are and the roles we have played within the grand design of the universe. This forgetting is not punishment, but a necessary part of the great experiment of consciousness, allowing us to rediscover ourselves through the experiences we create.
The ancient masters understood that our true identity resides not in the body or mind, but in the eternal consciousness that animates them. They taught that we are not the actors upon the stage, but the observer watching the play unfold. Our higher self exists on a plane far beyond the physical, guiding us through the journey of remembrance. To help their initiates awaken to this truth, the founders of the mystery schools developed sacred practices and ceremonies. Through meditation, breathwork, and in some cases, the use of sacred plants, initiates experienced altered states of consciousness that allowed them to glimpse the reality of their eternal nature.
In these states of expanded awareness, many initiates found themselves outside of their bodies, observing the world from a higher vantage point. From this place of clarity, they realized that the soul exists beyond the limitations of the physical realm and that nothing in this material world can truly harm what is eternal. They came to see that pain, fear, and suffering belong to the temporary self, while their essence remains untouched, radiant, and infinite. They understood that the only way the physical world could affect them was if they chose to identify with it and forget their higher truth.
For most of us, life unfolds much like a child who awakens in a movie theater, watching endless films without beginning or end. Over time, we begin to identify with the characters on the screen, feeling their pain, joy, and sorrow as if they were our own. We build identities around these experiences, attaching to roles that were never meant to define us. When the lights finally come on, we are momentarily disoriented, unable to separate ourselves from the story we have been living. We forget that we were never the actor, but the one sitting quietly in the audience, watching the story unfold.
This is the human condition. Lifetime after lifetime, we enter the theater of existence, becoming so deeply immersed in the roles we play that we forget who we are behind the mask. Yet the soul never forgets. The purpose of awakening is to remember our true identity as the eternal observer. When we realize this, everything begins to shift. We no longer cling so tightly to the pains or triumphs of the character we are playing. We begin to live with greater peace, awareness, and purpose, knowing that every experience is simply part of the unfolding story of the soul.
The key is balance and harmony. To live fully engaged in the experience of life while remaining detached enough to remember that we are not the roles we play. The mystics and sages have always told us that enlightenment is not escape, but awareness. It is the art of remembering who we truly are while still enjoying the beauty of the dream. When we live from this place, we rediscover our divine nature as creators and observers, awake within the grand movie of life, playing our parts with grace, compassion, and joy—while never forgetting that the light behind the screen is who we have been all along.
